Working Overtime Won’t Make You More Productive

Sometimes we need to work overtime as the regular working hours are not enough to complete our workload.

However, If this happens frequently or on the daily basis, there could be something wrong with the workload. In other situations, It could derive from the fact that people are getting distracted and find it hard to focus at work.

In some company culture, working overtime can tell that people are working more productively and therefore help their performance stand out in the company. This assumption might be missing some of serious problems that working overtime could lead most people to.

Physical health problems

According to the European Heart Journal’s research, people who worked three or more hours longer than normal faced 60% higher risk of heart-related problems than who did not. The problems could be death due to heart disease, nonfatal heart attacks and angina.

Research has shown that working overtime or long working hours can reduce sleeping time and therefore result in fatigue. It points out that people should have a sleep duration from 7 to 8 hours per day. This habit can help lower the risk of high blood pressure, acute myocardial infarction, cerebrocardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus.

Mental illness

Studies have indicated that long working hours could lead to depression. They have found that working duration from 34 hours to 48 hours per week increased the possibility of suffering from depression and anxiety. Additionally, the risk of experiencing depression and anxiety is reported to be higher for female workers.

Work-life balance

Working overtime gives employees less time to care about the personal life, therefore work-life balance will be no longer their priority. One of the key importance of becoming a productive employee is to be a happy employee.

According to a research at Cornell University, 30% of people are more likely to face marital conflicts when they work extra hours. More time at work means less time for yourself and your beloved ones, who are your source of emotional support.

How to avoid working overtime?

Working overtime is necessary sometimes, but do not make use of it. For passionate and hard- working employees who cannot control working time, here are some tips for you.

1. Have yourself a plan and know what your priorities are. By this way, you can be able to measure your working time effectively as well as meet your deadlines.

2. Feel free to give your colleagues a helping hand, but learn how to say NO sometimes. You will realize that you are not only helping yourself but also your colleague by making him or her independent.

3. Start and end your working hours at office punctually. Instead of staying late for working, training yourself to work 100% or more during the allotted time would make you a super star.

4. Stay focusing on your own work. Having chats and other communication in the company is good, but remind yourself not falling for distractions.
